On 14 May 2021, BioWare finally released Mass Effect Legendary Edition. It's the long-awaited remaster of the company's famous science fiction trilogy, including every DLC for every game. Some fans are taking this opportunity to replay their favorite RPG franchise, while other people are using it as an excuse to finally find out what all the hype is about.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition has gamers everywhere completely enamored, but it won't be long before more and more Shepards have completed their final mission. No one would blame players for wanting to spend more time in this gorgeous environment, but what is there to do after the end of the game? Here are a few ideas.
10/10 Go Back And Finish Side Quests... In 2 And 3
Not every player has the patience to slog through every single side quest before the game is over. Lots of people love to check off every box for those sweet, sweet hits of dopamine, but if you're eager to get to the finalé right away, BioWare is (mostly) prepared for you.
In Mass Effect 2 and 3, after the end credits roll, players are booted back to a save point before the final mission(s). Unfortunately, Mass Effect 1 is an outlier; the game doesn't spin back time automatically, so players will need to manually choose a save file before the ending. Since it's been a common complaint for years, it's surprising that BioWare didn't make this simple adjustment in the remaster.
9/10 Attempt An Insanity Run
Insanity is the absolute hardest difficulty a gamer can play Mass Effect Legendary Edition on. Fans looking to prove their dedication to the franchise will get a true challenge here, without a doubt.
Of course, it's also incredibly punishing. Shepard will need expert reflexes, the patience of a god, every upgrade under the sun, and the very best squad combinations. Thankfully, with a little time and dedication to the game, it's more than doable.
8/10 Hunt Achievements
Mass Effect Legendary Edition invites old fans of the series back to their favorite science fiction series. Many are taking the opportunity to do something they always wanted: complete all of the games' achievements.
Players who know the game well shouldn't have too much trouble repeating old sections to find missing areas, restarting their saves to choose a new romance option, and more. It's a simple way to boost your reputation online, too, if things like your gamerscore mean much to you.
7/10 Read The Books, Comics, and Graphic Novels
There are lots of fans who never read all the Mass Effect novelizations and comics, for a number of reasons: they didn't know the books existed at all; their younger self wasn't really a reader; they've just started getting into Mass Effect now; etc.
Players who fall into one of these categories should consider making a trip to their local library or bookstore (electronically or otherwise). Mass Effect: Revelation is a good place to start, as it was the first book ever written in this universe and provides a deeper backstory for Saren (the first game's villain).
6/10 Befriend Different Companions
As much as players would love to dedicate equal time to every companion, it's tedious to run between the NPCs on the Normandy or bring each one on an equal share of missions. Mass Effect Legendary Edition provides lots of reasons to replay the content and, by extension, give a little extra love to previously ignored squadmates.
Taking different NPCs on Shepard's missions will prompt new conversation options, different outlooks on events, and unique party banter.
5/10 Try Out Mods
Mass Effect Legendary Edition hasn't been out long, but modders are already making changes and additions to the content. One fan decided to help out players with accessibility needs by creating a mod that provides a field of view (FOV) slider.
Another example allows Shepard to be in gay relationships with their crewmates. Modding is a time-honored tradition in the gaming community – BioWare even looked to mods when it began working on the remaster – so better to enjoy than letting them go to waste.
4/10 Check Out Other Romances
Each Mass Effect game provides a set of male and female romance options for the player to choose from. Since Mass Effect is an RPG, the partner that Shepard chooses will have rippling effects throughout the game.
Love triangles emerge on the Normandy as companions vie for Shepard's attention, lives are put at risk, and characters that weren't romanced may even pick up relationships with one another (like Tali and Garrus during Mass Effect 3). Fans who decide to start a new game should undoubtedly explore other options for love.
3/10 Go Catch Side Quests That Timed Out
Players who return to finish all their side quests on the same character after beating the game may find that they aren't all available. Mass Effect isn't harsh enough to give time limits on main quests, but the developers are a little sneaky for some of the optional content.
Certain quests can time out after the player has progressed far enough into the main questline. If a fan plans to restart the game over again, they can keep an eye on the limited-time side quests as they progress.
2/10 Play Another Class
Mass Effect asks players to choose between six classes, each with some combination of one or more of three focuses (combat, biotics, and tech). For a fresh perspective on Mass Effect, consider replaying the game with a different class.
Many fans start by playing the soldier class since it's the simplest to understand, but they subsequently miss out on a lot of what the game has to offer. Biotics (basically space magic) lets players interact with and think about the battlefields in totally new ways, while Tech allows for Shepard to sit back and support their allies.
1/10 Work To Achieve A Perfect Or Disaster Ending
Whether they've played Mass Effect or not, many people in the gaming community know about the notorious endings to Mass Effect 3. After completing the game once naturally, fans need not feel any guilt about going online to check out the alternatives.
One fun experiment is to make all the correct choices and unlock the best and worst endings that are built into the game. There are lots of guides online about which choices constitute the worst ending and which constitute the best, so fans shouldn't have trouble.
